Jury sides with Headwater Research on all asserted claims, finds Samsung infringed on two patents
LONGVIEW, Texas – A federal jury in the Eastern District of Texas has awarded $278.8 million in damages to Headwater Research LLC in a patent infringement case against Samsung.

Tyler-based Headwater Research filed the lawsuit in March 2023, alleging that Samsung’s smartphones and tablets infringed on Headwater patents covering wireless communication technology that improves Wi-Fi speed, reliability and device battery life.
Samsung denied the allegations and argued that the patents were invalid.
Following a one-week trial before U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap in Marshall, the jury unanimously awarded Headwater $278.8 million in damages, finding that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., and Samsung Electronics America, Inc., infringed U.S. Patent Nos. 8,406,733 and 9,198,117.
Jurors found that Samsung infringed in all six asserted claims and rejected its challenges to the validity of the patents. Ms. Fair served as local counsel for Headwater Research, working alongside lead counsel from Russ August & Kabat, including Marc Fenster, Reza Mirzaie and Brian Ledahl. At trial, Ms. Fair conducted jury selection, presented Headwater’s founder and inventor, Dr. Greg Raleigh and cross-examined Samsung’s corporate representative.
The case is Headwater Research LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., et al., Case No. 2:23-cv-00103, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, before Judge Rodney Gilstrap.
