TYLER, Texas – An East Texas jury has awarded $502.8 million to software and technology company VirnetX (NYSE: VHC) for damages the company suffered from Apple’s unauthorized use of its patented network security technology.
In reaching its damages verdict, the jury determined that Apple owed VirnetX $0.84 in damages for each Apple device used since the launch of the Apple iOS 7 mobile operating system.
The verdict involved U.S. Patents No. 6,502,135 and No. 7,490,15, and was reached October 30 in Judge Robert W. Schroeder III’s courtroom in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division.
The latest trial is the fourth VirnetX patent dispute with Apple that firm founder Johnny Ward has assisted since 2016 as part of the legal team representing VirnetX. That same year, he helped secure $625.6 million and $302 million patent verdicts against Apple.
In addition to Mr. Ward, VirnetX was also represented by Caldwell Cassady & Curry, including lead attorney Brad Caldwell along with Jason Cassady, Austin Curry, Chris Stewart, Hamad Hamad, Daniel Pearson, John Summers and Warren McCarty.
